We began our last paddyfield ringing session of the season with a hot sun and a double rainbow…well at least the rainbow was change from the norm! But, as usual, it was the birds that made the morning beyond special!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We started off with one of our less commonly caught Buntings- a Chestnut Bunting! And this was an extra special girl, as she turned out to be an adult! We can tell this by her uniformaly fresh, dense and good quality wing, with a broad and dark tail!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next up was another uncommon catch for us- a Lanceolated Warbler! Though these guys looks similar to our more common Pallas’ Grasshopper Warbler, we can identify the Lanceolated from the flecked undertail coverts. Their moult strategies are also similar to Pallas’ Grasshopper, where we are essentially looking for the opposite of what we normally would- i.e. moult limits in adults, and no moult limits in juveniles. As previously mentioned, this is because even though adults undertake Summer ‘Complete’ moults and juveniles Summer partial, the adults moult is suspended (i.e. stopped) halfway through, meaning that we are looking for those new feathers that have been moulted, and the worn, bleached, unmoulted feathers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In our individual, we can see no moult limits. This is because, even though technically juveniles carry out summer partial moults, this moult is a very restrictive moult that usually only involves the head and body feathers, and none of the wing feathers. As mentioned, different species do better or worse jobs of taking care of their feathers. Turns out Lanceolated Warblers do a fairly good job of keeping their feathers nice so, despite being juvenile, these wings look nice and fresh in comparison to the adults. Therefore, this bird must be a 1st calendar year!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, we ended the morning with another Richard’s Pipit! As mentioned in our previous post, Richard’s Pipits adults carry out the same kind of moult as Grasshopper Warbler adults, however the juveniles Summer partial moult is more extensive than Grasshopper Warbler juveniles. This means we usually will find moult limits in the wing coverts of our Richard’s Pipits, and they are usually fair obvious due to the different colourations of the pale, ‘scaly’ juvenile plumage and warmer beige tones of postjuvenile feathers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In our bird we can see one Median Covert and one Greater Covert (GC6) that are clearly juvenile. Therefore, this must be a 1st calendar year bird! Interestingly, this bird seemed to have an all-moulted tail, with broad, black centres and rounded tips. A lovely ended to a lovely season!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
