Well, it is almost time for us to say goodbye to this ringing site! May is our final month of this project, and it proved to be a hot and quiet end. Rather anticlimactic, but not without its highlights!
One such highlight was yet another 2nd calendar year Brown Shrike! Similar to our bird last month, this one also showed juvenile PCs. However, this bird had moulted all of its wing coverts, and left all PCs unmoulted, with the telltale pale tips of juvenile feathers. Due to the strong black mask and unmarked breast, we can conclude this is a 2nd calendar year male!
Another mentionable species is this beautiful little Arctic Warbler! One of our phylloscopus migrants, this bird showed a totally uniform prebreeding plumage, as adults and juveniles both undertake a Complete Winter moult. This means we cannot separate adults and juveniles in spring, and we must age this bird as a 2nd calendar year or older.
