A slightly busier day today than yesterday, with 5 new birds, 2 of which were a bright shot of shine through the cloudy day!
But first up was a gorgeous adult female Japanese Thrush! This can be seen by the lack of black and steely grey-blue in the plumage, replaced by a more grey-brown tone. In the wing we can see fresh, neat and broad adult feathers throughout, and the same in the tail. As before mentioned, most thrushes moult Summer complete (adults), Summer partial (juveniles), so, if this was a juvenile, we would expect to find moult limits in the wing.
Next up was what had to be the highlight of the day- a gorgeous male Fork-tailed Sunbird. As with most of our residents, it’s expected that these guys carry out Summer complete moults in both adults and juveniles, and thus this bird must be aged as a 2nd calendar year or older!
And with this male came a female with exactly the same, uniform plumage, and, once again, must be aged as a 2nd calendar year or older. Another productive day!
