Our 2nd day in the forest proved to be much as the first, but with a couple more surprises!
It is not so common for us to catch Black-throated Laughingthrushes, another charismatic resident of Hong Kong who can usually be heard or seen hopping around the edges of park paths! These beautiful birds are also thought to carry out Summer Complete moults, so we must age them all as 2nd calendar years or older!
Next up was a gorgeous Chestnut Bulbul! Just like Laughingthrushes, these guys are residents with Summer Complete moults, and must also be aged as 2nd calendar year or older in Spring!
And continuing with our residents with Summer Complete moults was a little Huet’s Fulvetta! As with the other species, it is thought they can be aged by their iris colours, but now, in April, it is likely that at least some juveniles have developed an adult-type iris. Therefore, it is safest that we age them as 2nd calendar year or older birds!
