2023/11/09- Forest Ringing: The Brown Bois are Back!
by hkbwsofficial

We are finally back with our forest birds this week! As the weather keeps up its warmth, it proved to be a slow day, but the quality of birds never fails!

Our first two birds turned out to be one of our shyest and most elusive species- the Asian Stubtail! These guys can be seen hopping among the dense shrubs of the forests, but are more likely to be heard first by their buzzing, insect-esque call.

Both individuals seemed to show fresh, uniform wings. However, by observation of their skull development, it was revealed that both were 1st calendar year birds!

After a long, warm and humid day in the quiet forest, we ended with another gorgeous bird! The Greater-necklaced Laughingthrush, with its gorgeous, almost silvery facial patterning, is one of our more stunning resident Laughingthrushes (debateably). Both adults and juveniles (again) carry out Summer Complete moults. However, the iris colour of the adult is quite distinct, having a thick, dark blood-red tone, in comparison to the brown of the juveniles. Therefore, we can conclude that this individual was an adult! A nice, albeit slow day!
